You can trace it back to the dawn of civilization, depending on how you define racism. If it is intolerance of difference, then as long as there have been two or more cultures, there has been racism.

If you're talking about white-black racism specifically, then look at the history of slavery legislation in the United States. You can search the Congressional archives online, and history books will also have much to offer.

Racism and segregation are not the same. Racism refers to racial prejudice. Segregation refers to seperation of races. Restrooms were "whites only," as were many restaurants. Movies were "Whites only, or "Colored" only.

Segregation was due to Caucasians not wanting to sit next to black people on a bus, in a restaurant, they didn't want them to use the restrooms in the stores, such as Sears, or, drink from the same drinking fountain. They did not want their children to go to school with black kids. They didn't want their children to be around black children that did not speak English correctly.
Racism was based on 'fear of the *****," someone they thought was culturally different from them.

Racial riots broke out in many Southern cities. Demonstrations for Civil Rights were common during the turbulent '60s. The 60s helped turn-around the racial tension in the country. The peace-niks were anti-Viet-Nam and made their cause known. The 60s was the year of The Woodstock Generation, peace, love and harmony.

For a paper that has to cover that many things (whole book: summary, characters, themes, setting, author's style.. etc) you might want to consider a thesis sentence for each thing. Just make sure that you use paragraphs to very clearly separate the each thing. Remember that a thesis is going to be your oppion on whatever you are talking about in your paper. A strong thesis is often something that a English teacher looks for so make sure that it is clear and well thought out.

I cannot give you an academic answer to your question, yet RACISM, most probably, has been introduced on the History scene when two DIFFERENT creatures met each other.

Yet, here are some links which just might help you to see the frightening dimensions of it and how modern science is used to support various racist concepts.
