if you are just getting started on the game, you will have to update from what ever patch you are on to patch 2.0 (Before the Storm). It downloads each patch through about 1.4 or 1.5 separately, Before the Storm is like 1.4 - 2.0 in one patch. about 500Mb. You will have to patch repeatedly. It is normal. don't worry.
its TOTALLY worth the wait. wow pwns. hands down. amazing game. so just hit "download" and go watch TV. . . sleep. . . make out with your significant other.. (you wont have much time after you get playing lol). its worth it. just be patient. let it patch.
when you DO get it to work... roll an alliance toon on Elune and look for Divine Insight. Tell them Vill sent you. we'll get you geared and lvld for the xpan.

You'll almost never get a solid date on content patches. Blizzard is famous for it's response of: Soon (tm) After it comes out on the PTR, it seems to be about a month or so, but don't hold your breath. The more in the patch, the longer it seems to stay in the PTR before going live.

downloaded the free trial available at http://www.warcraft.com great game. this is a big game, there's a lot of patches to catch up on. and now there is an expansion type patch as well, i think? don't worry about it. unless you're doing something wrong, this is normal for large games, 6 hour download on high speed dsl, plus the patches so....
remember, "It's not a game, it's a world."

All told, there's... gosh, over 15 patches, if I'm remembering correctly. When you start up WoW, when it asks for name and password, look at the lower left. If it doesn't say that it's 2.0.something-or-other, you're going to need to keep patching. (It makes the jump after 1.12, so it's not too horrible.)
