I agree with your point. I haven't seen his new movie, but I remember the hype surrrounding the gore in "Braveheart" and "The Passion". These two movies were reenacting historical times which were known to be violent. Apparently this isn't appropriate, but gratuitous gore and violence from other directors in the horror genre is okay.

Good point. I guess for some reason more is expected of Mel Gibson. He's a good actor but really,..hasn't most every single film he's done, save a couple, been a bit hammy if you pay attention (overacted, melodramatic)?
You know what to expect from a movie like "Saw 3". Silliness.

I guess Saw 3 is so obviously fictional that it's easy not to blur Saw 3 with reality.
Apocalypto is like a dramatized story. I haven't seen the movie, but there's probably a reason for the comments.

again it goes back to his other movie.. you might of heard of it. Passion of the Christ... people said it was harsh and really brutal. unless you have seen it and I have tried to watch it but I cant not cry at the part where they start ripping his flesh from his bone.
No one said you had to watch it it is a personal choice.. but as far as Mel Gibson movies go I bet it is as good as they say it is bad..

I guess because it's not a 'horror' film.
It does deal with a very brutal warlike tribe of people, so I wouldn't consider it gratuitous violence. It makes the point of how very savage humans can be.
(It also might have something to do with comparisons to Passion... apparently Mel's got a bit of a thing for gore lately.)

Because a lot of people don't live in reality and don't realize that real life isn't very pretty sometiimes. The fall of the Mayan and Aztec empires were particularly bloody and nasty, but history classes in school don't teach stuff like that.
