"The Notebook" is a movie based on a book of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. In the movie it doesn't explain why Noah tells her his name is Duke but in the book it does. So my suggestion to understand why he does that is to read the book. It is better after watching the movie because then you can see the characters better in your mind.

Yes,he is the older version of Noah,he just uses the name Duke so he doesn't confuse or scare Allie in the Home since she can't remember him or the past all the time>Remember when she was with him and then started to lose her memory again...she freaked out!

It may have been a nickname. My grandfather was called danny (his real name) up until his late 30's, then someone began calling him pete. (There is no "pete", peter, or anything of the such in my family) Most the time it'll come from a story or something that happened in the persons life, and that's how they'll introduce themselves

I've always thought it was suppose to be Noah, why else would he read the story to her? It says in the movie " Read this and I'll always come back to you." GREAT MOVIE!
