I too have a problem with people who say "aks" or "axe" when they are really saying ask. If it is a person I feel comfortable in correcting, such as a student or a second language speaker who has told me to correct their english, I do.
Why do they do it. Well believe it or not, it is following the normal pattern of making words in english. Most single sylable words in english that start with a vowel start in the back of the throat and move foward into the mouth. "Ask" goes foward, than back again, IN ONE SYLABLE. When someone says, "Axe" or "Aks" they are actually trying to make a non-standard word standard. Sort of like saying, "foots" or "digged".

I am soooo sorry that someone with speech issues turns you off. I am in my upper 20's and when I say the word ask, I really have to stop and form the word slowly. I have had problems with the word ask since i was a kid. I am not trying to make Non-standard english an accepted form. I am a white female, so it's not an ethnic background thing. It's just that word. I can say task, and mask just fine, so i don't know why.
Do you have problems with people that have R issues as well, it is more common? (and honestly, i have to concentrate on going to the store and not the star as well....)
If you have this severe of a problem with someone else's speech turning you off... maybe it's your probem and not theirs. Why didn't someone teach you to be more tolerant of people who are different than you?????

Really that is another form of ask -- the reason it gets pronounced that way can range from cultural usage to the words that are being used before or after the word.
I was told by a linguist friend of mine that it was the previous form of the word, so in a way we are just going back to the way it was originally pronounced!

I hate it!! My mother was adamant about using proper English! She once told be that when you use improper English it makes you sound ignorant. And especially because I am African-American, she REALLY hated it!! She would tell me that "An Axe is something that you use to cut wood, now what are you trying to "ASK" me? and "Even the most beautiful, successful person in the world will sound like a fool when they open their mouths if they don't know how to speak their own language correctly" We couldn't use the word "ain't" either. I'm glad that she did because all of my siblings and I use proper English and teach all of our children to use it correctly.

Those people are incredibly stupid. They scare me.
I have to ask. How dumb can a person get?
They turn me off too. It's borderline creepy.

Oh, hell yeah!! It makes me sick!!
Are they that lazy? Where they won't make an effort to speak correctly. I'm sure they have read it and looked at the letters.
There is no excuse for speaking that way.
