G'day Penny,

Thank you for your question.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was a popular novel written by Betty Smith. It is believed to be largely autobiographical and deals with Francie Nolan who grows up in poverty in Williamsburg. The book was published in 1943 and was a big hit with a movie made from it a couple of years later. Peggy Ann Garner and James Dunn won Academy Awards for their roles in it so it would be worth seeing. It has an IMDb rating of 7.5. t was also turned into a musical and a Bugs Bunny cartoon "A Hare Grows in Manhattan" features the book.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Seasons greetings to you and yours

More than the book itself, I remember the person who told me to read it ....it was an elderly man who had moved over a thousand miles from his beloved Brooklyn, in his retirement years....he said when he moved to my city, he asked the real estate agent to "show me some curbs and sidewalks!"
He recommended the book, and I did read it; but that was several years ago. I do remember learning a little more about life in what we today call the "projects", another generation ago as the book is set I think in the 1920's? It was kind of long though - the story did drag on a bit. I didn't know there was a movie about it.
