If your furnace is not defective it will not cause a gas leak. This is because if the pilot light is out the automaticly opening gas valve to the burner is shut off and will not open when the thermostat call for heat. This is an important safety feature for all gas furnaces and is carefully designed to operate properly.

If your furnace has a pilot light, it will have a thermocoupler (like a thermometer for mechanicals) which is set into the flame to sense the heat, the thermocoupler is connected to the gas valve to shut it off if it gets too cold (no flame). it is posible to have a faulty thermocoupler or gas valve - so it is possible to have a leak, but the safeguard is there to help prevent it.
