Walnuts do not grow trees with the same nuts usually because most are grafted hybrids.., but if you want the experience, 1. be sure to use plenty of seeds, 2. mix about 20 seeds into a gallon of peat moss/ new compost mixed and wetted to about 30 % relative humidity== damp, but not wet. 3. store in your crisper drawer through winter. 4. prepare planting bed to 2 feet deep and wide and long enough to plant 2 feet apart-- OR get 6"diameter x 3' long plastic pipe filled with rich half compost sandy loam,, one for each seed. 5. plant 4" deep , water like any other potted plant. 6. Transplant to permanent growing place when three sumers are past--- and that is why nursery stock is 25 to 250$ for walnut and pecans

nut seeds like this are the hardest to get started,, thats why these trees produce so many!! I have many varities in my pasture,, usually i gather the seedlings i find growing there which has first passed through one of my cows!! the chemicals in the cows stomach soften the nuts so they can grow... commercial growers use something similare but is a trade secret!! you can try to just barely crack the nuts so the kernal has a way to grow out of the shell,, this works sometimes,,,or very carefully remove the kernals and try to plant them bare,,, DO NOT over water as they will rot easily
