First of all, a sprain is not a muscle tear. It is a ligament tear. Secondly, staying off it for upwards of 6 weeks is not the answer. That is the last thing you want to do. What you have to look at is properly managing your injury. Generally, a ligament takes on average 8 months to totally heal. Not to say that you will not be able to ambulate pain free, it just takes a while. If it has been 6 months, you have to ask yourself what have you done to get yourself better. A proper rehab for a serious ankle sprain is a must. If you are still experiencing pain and swelling 6 months post, you may need to be seen by your physician so you can be referred to an orthopaedic specialist. You may have some damage that was not properly diagnosed the first time. The ortho will then give you a script for physical therapy. An experienced PT will be able to bring you along in your rehab program that will show optimal results in as timely and efficient manner as possible. You have to commit yourself and buy in to the process and I assure you you will see reults. Sprains, strains, and broken bones are my business. Good luck.

In most cases, yes, sprains eventually do heal completely. A sprain is a muscle tear. Whether or not yours will heal correctly and completely depends on your age, general health, how much you are able to rest it and the degree of damage done. 6 months is excessive. Brace it and stay off it COMPLETELY for at least six weeks. This will increase the weakness, but, if your body can heal it, it should in this amount of time. If you still experience moderate pain and swelling after this time, it's time to get an appointment with an orthopedist.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

For sure. But you really should be seeing a doctor about this…if its continued for 6 months already
Ibuprofen and other drugs would help with the pain and swelling

You have a really serious sprain.
I sprained my ankle last year in volleyball tryouts; I couldn't walk for a few days, but six months is incredible! A doctor's visit and some rest would do you some good; sprained ankles hurt, I've been there.

It will if you stay off of it. if you walk on it alot the swelling will never go away. you need about 6 weeks off your ankle if you don't have crutches go to your doctor and get some.
