They can have an emergency buzzer system, so when nan has been on the sherry she can call the ambulance. This works on batteries, so even of she forgets to pay the electricity bill.

NB: In England they are planning to close the Accident & Emergency wards so grannies will have to travel 30 or 40 miles or so before they can patch them up. This will save money as some of the patients will croak it on the way.

Get her a Lifeline call system. Contact her local council or Age Concern Group. It is a wireless "bleeper" that is worn around the neck and connects to the phone when pressed in incidences of a fall or other accident. It goes through to a central call centre, and they in turn will communicate with the person and either call a member of the family or dispatch a mobile warden.

If your nan does not have an alarm button that she can wear around her neck, I suggest that you persuade her to get one. They a re free to vulnerable elderly people.
Then if she DOES fall and cannot make a sound, simply pushing the button will put her in contact with someone who can get help to her.
