First you install the iTunes music management program on your pc of mac.
next you put songs into the iTunes music library
a. have iTunes copy the songs from your CD collection
b. put mp3 files - from any source - on a protable drive like a thumb drive, open the iTunes library and the drive window and drag the mp3 files to the library window - they will be copied into the library
c. buy and download them from the Apple iTunes Store
With the library now populated with songs, hook the iPod up to your computer and turn the computer on. After it boots up iTunes will be activated and transfer all the songs in the music library to the iPod. As you add or delete songs from iTunes it will add or delete them from the iPod each time you activate the computer with the iPod attached.

There is a program called iTunes, which is how you transfer your songs to your iPod. You download it from the iTunes webiste. It's free and easy to use. You simply import your songs to iTunes and then all you have to do is plug in your iPod and your songs will automatically go to your iPod. Pretty seamless.
Below is a detailed link on exactly what you have to do.

iPods synce with iTunes. Unfortunately you need iTunes to run iPod.
If you have bought it yet I suggest going with Microsofts version. It has a lot more drivers and is much easier to use then iPod. I wish I had know about it before I bought my iPod

It's pretty simple. just plug your I-pod into the computer, load I-tunes on. and put your songs into i-tunes and tell them to sync up. there's detailed instructions with your I-pod, or online.
