the best gifts are always given by people who have already had babies as they know what is handy and practical. the best gift was from one such person, a basket containing 12 cloth nappies (we used disposables but these were great for burp cloths, nappy change mats, etc etc), infant paracetemol, pegs (you can never have enough with all of bub's washing!), teething remedy, thermometer, feeding spoons and chocolate! obviously the chocolate didn't last long but the rest of the stuff has continued to be useful at various times over the nine months since we had our angel...

I have 3 and one on the way and I have to say many things which seem like necessity you find out you do not need or ever use. But a few that I have loved w/ allof my kids;

1. This is by far my FAVORITE thing... (Mothers touch Large comfort bather ) $19.99 www.babiesrus.com

2. several towels and blankets so you aren't washing them all the time (they spit up a lot so you will go through quite a few) as well as burp rags,clothes,onesies, pajamas, socks

3. LOTS of diapers (they can go through quite a few in a day)
in case you have a big baby do not buy many newborns..our kids were never able to wear them they went straight to size 1's

4. if the baby is due during the cold season hats are great, and big fluffy blankets

Onesie's. Cloth diapers - they make excellent burp clothes, even if the mother uses disposables. Soft, warm baby blankets. Diapers.
