Personality, of course, but the avatar matters to the extent that it helps with recognition.
I'm able to find Qs from my faves quickly by picking out their avatars, and, for some (Faerie, Lalyn, Weasel, for instance) I look forward to their next avatar choices.
Can't speak for how others see me.

personality. I like to think people know my questions and answers on sight after a while, cuz I recognize lots of my favs without seeing the name or avatar, just the question or answer.

For both, I change my avatar for the season it is!
I don't have a Y! 360 so I just change the clothes and background.
