I'm sure that your boss knows the co-worker is lying, but doesn't want to deal with it as most people want to attempt to "avoid pain at all cost." Your boss is probably thinking its too painful to confront her, but in the end, your boss can lose good employees. Sounds like your boss is a bit on the weak side. In my experience, the best thing to do is go up the chain of command. Go to his/her boss and let them know what is going on then hopefully, you can get this thing resolved in the most expedient manner.

there probably isn't a way since the boss backs off and doesn't deal with her. The only way a boss sees a problem is if you can prove without doubt that it affects work. Prove that it will hit his pocket because things aren't getting done. Most times they don't care about the office morale ... been there many times.

Prepare a log of her activities. Stick to facts. Take it to your boss and explain how this person's negative behaviour adversely affects business. Keep on at your boss, but only do it in the most non-confrontational, objective way you can. If your boss does nothing, go above her if possible or threaten to leave, or at a least hint about leaving. You could also confront your co-worker by throwing her lies back at her. Get backup from someone else who is being affected by it.

No. The boss probably knows the girl is doing this and thinks it is ok. Is it possible that the girl has some kind of relationship with the boss out of work? At my job certain people get to do what ever they want, like coming in late or having a longer lunch time then everyone else.

well if your boss already knows about her actions and he/she isn't even doing anything about it, that usually means that she's not going to. Or maybe you can record her saying something really bad about your boss haha.

best to stay out of it. you might slip and fall when you try to kick her under the bus and get run over yourself. learn to ignore it. sooner or later karma will get her.
