You import more oil from Canada than any other nation, but that is a very small % of the oil used in your country. The best way around this is #1- The US start acting more responsibly in your oil usage,#2 Try to be more diplomatic with some of your other suppliers like Iran, Iraq & Venezuala.#3 Why should Canada want to keep your "Hummers" on the road and run the risk of running short ourselves?

Oil is a dwindling resource. Also, Canadian oil is mostly off-shore or oil sands - which means it's more expensive to extract than subterranean sources. China is in fierce competition with the U.S. and other western countries for oil (And western countries among themselves).
Many countries are trying to secure sources of oil because the resources are dwindling. Also, if oil prices fall below a certain point, extraction from Canada becomes unprofitable.
But basically, it's not necessarily about getting oil right now, but more about making sure there's oil in the near future. Either way, major oil reserves will be gone in a few decades and mankind will simply have to find another way to ensure his energy needs (or wants).

I believe you facts are incorrect...................

Major OPEC oil-producing countries during December 2002 included:
Saudi Arabia - 56.2 million barrels
Venezuela 20.2 million barrels
Nigeria 19.3 million barrels
Kuwait - 5.9 million barrels
Algeria - 1.2 million barrels

Leading imports from non-OPEC countries during December 2002 included:
Mexico 53.8 million barrels
Canada 46.2 million barrels
United Kingdom 11.7 million barrels
Norway 4.5 million barrels

Oil is Iraq's Economy
In it's background analysis, EIA reports that the Iran-Iraq war, the Kuwait war and punishing economic sanctions greatly deteriorated Iraq's economy, infrastructure, and society during the 1980s and 1990s.
Unexplored regions of Iraq could yield an additional 100 billion barrels. Iraq's oil production costs are among the lowest in the world. However, only about 2,000 wells have been drilled in Iraq, compared to about 1 million wells in Texas alone.

Oil price shocks and price manipulation by OPEC have cost our economy dearly—about $7 trillion from 1979 to 2000 cost the U.S. economy—and each major price shock was followed by a recession.
