Do dogs eat each other?? I used to think that though they are meat - eating creatures, they wouldn't indulge in cannibalism.
I was proven wrong yesterday, when i saw a stray dog, a B*tch that gave birth to 2 puppies, eat one of her own pups. I guess the pup was dead, coz i never saw it move. The dog looked kinda hungry so my brother and i threw it some bread. It gobbled it up. We were looking for more food to give it when we saw it munching away at the pup.
Are dogs cannibals??

In this case it's not a case of cannibalism. It's a hold over from a dog's wild ancestor's days. It doesn't want to leave a trace or scent around to attract predators. The B*tch will also eat the afterbirth for the same reason. A female just giving birth will be in an extremely week state and would be hard pressed to defend herself and her litter. So she leaves as little trace as possible.

If they are hungry enough, most animals will cannibalize their young. That's so sad about the puppy, though! I think that Mommy was probably REALLY hurting for nutrients. You might want to call the Humane Society to tell them where you saw the dogs. If you see the puppy again, you'll definitely want to try to protect it----the mother might try the same thing again, if she's hungry enough, and both dogs deserve to have good homes. If you can't keep them, there might be a Dog Rescue organization that will.

This is a common problem in most animals.not just dogs.
In most cases a dog will eat her pup because it is either born weak, sick or malformed. It is a quicker death for the pups. Also, helps to reabsorb nutrients from the offspring. No,dogs are not cannibals.
