Definately a needle. Guns can't be sterilized, which can cause a nasty infection or even hepatitis if your lucky enough! The blunt trauma could cause your cartilage to collapse. If your lobes took ages to heal I doubt your cartilage would heal anytime in the next few years. If taken care of correctly cartilage piercings take about a year to heal if done by a needle. Gunned piercings always seem to take longer to heal because of the trama you gave your ear. The jewelry is a crappy quality. You say you have sensitive ears then you will want to stay away from gun jewelry. No matter how for "sensitive ears" they contain a high amount of nickel in them. The butterfly backing is a good place for bacteria to live and grow in, which causes an infection. Also, the studs aren't long enough for the swelling of a cartilage piercing, which could cause the front or even back of the stud to imbed in your ear which has to get surgically removed - ow! I could go on, but guns are bad, mmmk? A needle pierce is a quick poke and it's over, the piercer at a Tattoo/piercing place has way more experience then a gun "piercer". If you tell them about your sensitive ears, they will more then likely use Titanium jewelry (never heard of anyone have a reaction to titanium) that is the correct length for YOUR anatomy (piercings aren't a 'one size fits all' everyone has a different anatomy). They will also give you the correct way to care for it rather then put some bacteria forming "cleaner" on your ears.

Do not get the ear cartilege pierced.....doctors and medical professionals advise against it because IF it does get infected you cannot take a oral antibiotic to clear it up...because in the cartilege there are no blood vessels to "carry" the antibiotic to the infected area. Some people also complain it never really heals and that you cannot lie on that ear because it is too painful. It is just not worth all the worry and pain.

I've never heard about what ear you get pierced determining your sexual orientation (for women). I got my right ear done about 6 yrs. ago, and it hurt like heck when I got it done, but that's because it's thicker there.

Once you get it done, you want to make sure you keep it clean and apply ointment (I would use alcohol and Neosporin) on it to prevent infection. The stuff they gave me at Claire's didn't work for me.

You CAN wash your hair, but you want to make sure you keep your hair up or in a pony tail to prevent it from touching your ear. You don't want any of the chemicals you might put in your hair to get on your ear. When you sleep you have to try to not sleep on it. If you do, the pain will surely wake you up!! I do have to tell you, though, that it takes A LOT longer to heal than an ear piercing. Mine took 6 - 8 months!

Good luck!!!

I actually have 3 cartilage piercing and it didn't really hurt that much. Perhaps like a 30second burning, tingling sensation. And it's absolutely not true about the rumor which you can't wash your hair... I've never heard of that. Mine took a couple months to heal and that's about it.
