PS3 and Wii do have free online play, but there is a catch. Game developers who aren't owned by Nintendo or Sony are less likely to add online multiplayer in there games. Xbox may charge $50 a year, but you it is money well spent.
I hope they don't make it free unless it will provide the same experience at the price of nothing.

Because it takes a lot of people to get XBL the way it is. XBL is like a whole community where people can challenge each other. It's run by MS.
Not sure what the plans are for PS3 online, but it's probably going to be no where near as good as XBL. Is Sony going to run the service or will Sony leave it up to the individual game companies to run it, like they did with the PS2.

Xbox Live is a much more complicated operation than Sony's online services. It requires servers and bandwidth to have friends lists, gamerscores, all the downloadable content, and other things. Xbox operates Live's servers unlike the PS2, where the companies who made the games (Ex. EA operated Maddens online play for the PS2) had to operate the online play.

There's silver and there's gold. Silver's free.
The PS3's is free, of course. A better idea... Be quiet! Get a Wii! WiiConnect 24 is free and just as good as any other service!

You can do lots of stuff for free, the only thing you have to pay for is the Gold subscription, which is about £30 for a year, and the only thing this allows you to do is play with other people, you can still download all the cool stuff using the Silver one... as I have been told...

If a company can make money off of something within reason. They will.
I doubt they will ever make it free, it is more likely that as less people use it and their cash yield decreases.. they'll just shut it down.

Xbox360 isent because of all the millions of Gigs for games and demos and such
plus that they are gonna make a webcam for xbox360
and no i realy dont think that it will be free any time soon

probably not cuz x box is more expensive and more people use it so its not free because they know more people will pay for because its awesome unlike ps3
