I am part Latvian have lived in Latvia now for 2 years. It is an indpendant country and Riga is it's capital.
It was indeed part of the Soviet Union, along with Lithuania, Estiona, Ukraine, Belarus.... not just "behind the Iron Cutrain" as other countries, such as Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary were.
On of the biggest mistakes and insults you can make to a Latvian is to assume or ask them if they are Russian or if Latvia is part of Russia. Latvians are very different than Russians, being their own people group and having their own language (nothing like Russian).
It is in fact a beautiful country! Old town Riga is great, but there are some other smaller cities that are nice to visit, too. (i.e. Ventspils, Liepaja, Talsi, Madona & Sigulda.

This question can make Latvians very angry.
Latvia is currently independent state with Riga being capital. (I agree that it is beautiful but only in the very central locations, there is still a lot of improvement to be done outside this area).
Latvia joined European Union on May 2004.

Latvia is an independent country, never was the state of Russia, but one of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union.Riga is the capital, very beautiful capital!

Latvia is it's own Country and yes Riga is the capital.
I think it was part of the former USSR (but I am not 100% sure)

Latvia is a independent country. It was one of the so called captive states that was annexed by the former Soviet Union in 1940.It has now regained independence.
Riga is the capital .

Latvia was one of the Soviet occupied countries, along with Estonia and Lithuania. It wasn't part of the Soviet Union, just Soviet occupied. It is a country. Yes, the capital is Riga and it is part of the European Union.
