Most modern automatic transmissions have a chip in them that will prevent the car from downshifting, say, into first gear when you're moving at 60 mph. Still, I wouldn't try it.
When climbing a hill, only downshift if the AT can't decide which gear to be in and switches back and forth--choose the lower one. When descending, don't use the transmission to slow down, use brakes to decelerate. Replacing brakes is cheaper than replacing the transmission. However, once you've braked, do use a low gear to coast in, to prevent you from freely accelerating down the hill. Under normal driving circumstances, leave it in D with the O/D on.

No, You Should Never Downshift in an Automatic Car While Normally driving. It Will Tear Up The Transmission. Only Downshift When Going Up a Hill, Or When Driving In Snow.

ok there will be extra harm to the engine than transmission. first the engine has to make extra revolutions a minute, subsequently inflicting extra placed on. 2d based on the climate the transmission will over warmth inflicting the fluid to break down inflicting extra tranny placed on.. i force a protege and that i understand precisely what you mean. yet on previously automatics in case you shitft incorrect you will redline something fierce.(high priced to repair that harm). that may not take place on your automobile, some trannys are equipped with a device that preclude shifting till the shift is secure
