Yes Vlad the impaler was a huge inspiration for the Dracula story. However late Victorian England got proper into the whole vampire thing. The idea of an elegant and suave vampire comes mainly from the Lord Byron story later stolen and elaborated on by Dr Pollinari ?
Prince Vlad was a Wallencian warlord charged by the Holy Roman Emperor to protect the west from the Turks. There are a number of Turkish films about him, they hold him in some esteem both good and bad.

A couple people have hit on Vladd the Impaler as the original Dracula, this is true enough. The name Dracula actually comes from Vladds father. His father was a member of a Christian order known as The Order of The Dragon. In Vladds native language, the word for dragon is Dracul. Dracula literally means Son of The Dragon.

Vlad Tepes (pronounced tse-pesh), who intermittently ruled an area of the Balkans called Wallachia in the mid 15th century. He was also called by the names Vlad III, Vlad Dracula and Vlad the Impaler. The word Tepes stands for "impaler" and was so coined because of Vlad’s propensity to punish victims by impaling them on stakes, then displaying them publicly to frighten his enemies and to warn would-be transgressors of his strict moral code. He is credited with killing between 40,000 to 100,000 people in this fashion.

Usu. assoc. with Vlad in Transylvania (mod. name). Popular lit: Bram Stoker, Whitby associations (stage hand there) and now a Drac. museum + books. Much generic supernatural stuff re. blood, silver, running water, moon phases, shape shifting. Was probably a Tory: sucking life force out of folk and leaving a trail of bodies like currants.
