when the singer overdoes it, likewise, whitney houston's i will always love you and her high pitched vocals and the bit where she goes 'i will always love yoouuuu!', or if it's just plain cheesy, such as chris de burgh's 'lady in red' and the lyrics and the tune are just so cringeworthy. also, in instances where it becomes the soundtrack to a film- eg, 'love is all around' by wet, wet wet and 'my heart will go on'(and on and on) by celine dion and of which has spent bloody ages in the charts. and as for michael bolton's 'when a man loves a woman', by god, that is so cheesy, its bad.
as well as the familiarity and the potential vomiting factor that it produces just drives you round the bend.

The words "oh baby" feature way too much.
A key change at the end.
Too many repetitions of the chorus, which repeats the last line a lot with lots of over exaggerated vocals.
But, if you begin to cringe and feel uncomfortable, thats usually a good sign that the cheese factor is so there, that jaccobs crackers start growing in your ears and a cheese board comes out your bum. :)
