I just saw a commercial about Darfur.. What is Darfur? a city state country? and what is happening there?

Essentially, it's a genocide. Sudanese military is fighting two rebel forces. The rebel forces want the government to focus on the underdevelopent and marginalization of the region, but in response, the Sudanese government and military have been killing not just the rebel forces, but women and children as well as specific ethnic groups. It's a complex issue that's been going on for more than 3 years. It's a sad, sad thing and a lot of countries around the world are doing very little. After Rwanda, we said "never again." Well, it's happening, and we're still doing nothing.

Sudan is in northeast Africa, near Chad and Libya. Darfur is a region inside the country.

Darfur is a region in Sudan, a country on the east coast of Africa. A civil war has been going there since 2003 between the gov't backed Arab Janjaweed and two or three non-Arab rebel factions. Caught in the middle are 2.5 million displaced Sudanese. An estimated 400,000 people have been killed, most of them civilians. The Janjaweed have massacred more than a few non-Arab towns while leaving Arab towns untouched. It is a humanitarian nightmare that the UN can't be bothered with.
