I recommend the Macbook.

Apple has the best customer service in the industry and OS X has no adware/spyware/virus issues at this time. Those alone are great selling points but the build of the machine is also able to withstand most kid related accidents. The downside is the price.

The benefit of a Dell (or other PC OEM) is that you get a computer they likely know everything about as soon as its out of the box. The downside is Windows will be swamped by malicious software in very little time if you don't lock down the computer a whole lot, and if you lock it down then they won't want to use it as much, plus they can't learn as much.

Hi, I was at Office Depot yesterday and they seemed to have the best, or at least, some of the best prices on laptops.
Their Sunday ads are really good for sale items for Office Depot too
I also found the workers to be nice and helpful.

make sure its game compatible(good video card and so on), they'll like that. and plenty of RAM for saving temporary files. nothing boring either, something flashy, that they can enjoy using, not have to hide it from people, finding it embarasing. good luck!
