The Internet - a world of information at your finger tips.

The home computer:

Look at how much it has changed our lives and almost everyone has one. It lead to turning the Internet into what it is today. Before the home computer the Internet was a communication system to keep the military in contact in case of a nuclear attack. Later some major Universities connected to it so they could communicate to the military and government on their projects. It would have remained at that level and seldom used if not for the home computer. Which means super fast research, global communications, online stores and the rest would have been impossible without the Home Computer.

The PlayStation, X-Box, and Nintendo are just home computers dedicated to playing games. Look at all the impact they have made. They are also one of the best uses of intense graphics, or at least the most common application.

Cell Phones, GPS systems and even some complicated digital watches are just examples of specialized computers. If the home computer was never made then most of these things would be impossible. Companies would not have thought to market these items if they didn’t' see how successful the Home Computer has been.

Look at what a Home Computer can do, everything form being linked to form a "poor man's" super computer to revolutionizing finances. The first application made for a home computer was a primitive form of EXCEL. Up to that point if a single cell is changed then the entire row and columns had to be recalculated by hand. Digital Calculators made that easier, but it still called for a lot of calculation, erasing, and writing. Small business couldn't afford that so finical planning was mostly based on educated guesses.

Then we have the word processor, which is to typing as a bicycle is to a sports car. Desk Top publishing is now possible for anyone with a computer and the right program. This helped to create the blog phenomena and all the web pages on the Internet. It makes writing research papers incredibly easy and with spell check they always look good and are (for the most part) written correctly.

With POWER POINT anyone can make a presentation with a slide show, even video and sounds. This has helped make business meetings less boring, and more informative (since we retain more information that we see, then we read). It has also helped teaching.

ACCESS is a database program that is very good for keeping records and categorizing information. At first only a few major companies could use them. With the invention of the Home Computer even small business could build a database. My father used a program like this to handle customer records and help with the billing. When he wanted to make a mass mailing the database had all the information so he could print out labels that could be stuck on to envelopes, making the job much faster.

These are only the applications that Microsoft Office provides, Star Office, from Sun, has the same programs for free. Look at all the other programs available for computers; an interactive periodic table, games, studio mixing audio programs and many others. It makes it possible for people with a home computer to become movie stars with professional quality editing, good special effects, and the ability to show those movies to an audience as large as what a professionally done major block buster can draw.

The drafting, construction and design world have been forever changed by the home computer. Now it is possible for a small company to do things that only the major companies could do. With the program AutoCAD it is possible to create a part on the computer and then feed that data to a machine to make the part automatically. The design process has been shortened to days what used to take weeks. Work has started on linking a computer to a concrete laying machine to form houses, built by an ink jet printer style concrete layer. A concrete house can be made in a few days with a tiny crew, instead of months. The computers also don’t mind working 24 hours a day, and don’t have labor unions, or families to be taken care of.

Home Computers are becoming so common that our appliances have become interconnected via the Internet. So that you can check if you have enough milk in the refrigerator and order more all from work, or over your cell phone. Look at all the changes the cell phone and the Internet have made in people’s lives. It has brought families, friends and the world closer together. Long distance relationships are possible, and with a video camera you can see and talk with the person in real time. It is the next best thing to actually being there. Since there are so many free email providers we can communicate better, faster, and far cheaper than if we only used the phone. For many years the phone company promised us videophones, but it wasn’t until the home computer combined with the Internet and video cameras that it was possible. The home computer has so many more areas that it can develop and improve.
