How to take more initiative?

I'm a very positive person...out going...like to help others... but I lack taking initiative...I always wait someone else to take initiative and then I join and help them..How to improve myself on this?

I guess it may depends on why you wait. Are you afraid of something (criticism, failure, blame)?
