you first write a proportion representing the distance between the cities.

( 4/1 = 240/x)

240 (1) = 4x --cross multiply the fraction. top left times bottom right, top right times bottom left

240 = 4x --solve what you can on either side

60 = x . . . . . . --you want to isolate the variable (get the x by itself), so you have to get rid of four. since 4 is being multiplied, you divide 4x by 4. you have to keep both sides equal, so you have to do the same on the other side. 240 divided by 4 is 60.

240 (1) = 4 (60)
240 = 240
--check your answer, and it works, so
"60 miles = one inch" is the scale
