How do you say "when I was young, I was collecting sea shells at the beach" in french?

This is the word for word translation: Quand j'étais jeune, je ramassais des coquillages sur la plage.
You can also say ''Dans ma jeunesse, je ramassais des coquillages sur la plage.''
It sound better I think and means the same thing.
