I don't like to use bleach for cleaning because it's irritating to the senses and always gets on something. However, it's that time of season and I need to clean some pesky mold. I was thinking about going after it with a scrub sponge and some dish soapy water, and then spraying it afterward with Lysol disinfectant. Anyone have any better suggestions?

You can use vinegar believe it or not. Vinegar helps prevent mold from growing but your house would smell like a pickle.
Maybe try Alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol) or one of the others listed on the website below. The EPA has also suggest now using just detergents and water to clean mold rather then bleach. You need a dehumidifier and a mold resistant paint plus some of the new paperless or blue wallboard so that you don't get mold again.

I am allergic to the aerosols in bleach but still get my wife to use it on any sign of mold whilst I stay out of the way for the day.

No I am not being a male chauvinist pig - just being sensible! Mold can be responsible for some pretty serious breathing problems and diseases. Bleach is the only sure way of killing it.

Vinegar and water should do the trick. Unfortunately it seems that all useful cleaning agents are also irritants. Your idea sounds good as well. Maybe a combination of all 3 would work best?

You need to kill it. Bleach is the easiest way.
Soap & water with a brush may get most of it, but it may come right back.
The bleach will usually get it all, and inhibit regrowth for a while.

A good wash is 3 parts warm water to one part apple vinegar. It doesn't leave a bad smell or stain.

Try scrubbing with hydrogen peroxide. It is odor free and does a good job for me.
