when the computer stores information on the hard drive, some of the files are stored in chunks rather than all in one big piece. Over time, it can take your hard drive longer to access files because it has to piece them back together before showing them to you. Defragmenting will put the files back together into continuous chunks and also, often free up some space on your hard disk. May improve your machine's performance a bit, too. It's a good idea to do this every once in awhile.

Disk defragmentation is when your computer will take foreffingever to complete this task.

It basically puts things back in order. It will help your computer go faster, but while the defrag is happening, it'll take a while, especially if you haven't done it in a while.

Hope this helps.

Lol, that's a pretty "interesting" question.

Hmmm... disk defragmentation is basically cleaning up your hard drive. Think about the data like stuff in your drawer. Usually, you just throw it in (I know I do) but if you defragment the hard drive (organize the stuff into nice piles) you will find that it's faster and easier to find stuff in your drawer (hard drive).

In short, disk defragmentation is cleaning up your hard drive and making it faster. Hope that helped :)

Take a well-organized filing cabinet and dump all its contents on the floor and mix them up. They are now fragmented. They need to be sorted out to properly use them.
Take a well-organized hard drive and do much the same thing (except it got mixed up in regular use). In order for it to function best, it also needs to re-arrange and sort out the fragments. This is called Defragging or Defragmentation. Really helps if you defrag your machine once in a while.
Try "programs", "accessories", "disk defragmentation" to get it started... takes a while - possibly hours if it is badly fragmented.
Help??

It means one big long file, that is what you want once you have defragged, it means your hard drive will run more efficiently rather than the drive running all over the place fro fragments of files.

its where contiguous files are moved so they are adjacent on your hard drive, making it faster to access files in a group that are commonly used together.
