Extinctions occur as a low background level apart from anthropomorphic disturbances. Natural extinctions could be due to environmental and or genetic stochasticity (perturbations) ie naturally small or rare populations that might be negatively influenced by adverse weather conditions.
Present or recent extinctions ie within the last 200 years have been influenced by a number of factors, often more than one factor affecting a species extinction.
It's thought that the arrival of feral cats from shipwrecked vessels on the west coast, from the 1600's, caused an initial wave of extinctions for many critical weight range mammals in the central desert regions.
Later, many other detrimental species (fox, rabbits) were brought over with the first fleet colonisers because they wanted to recreate a land more like home (Australia was a scary place for them).
With subsequent land being cleared for agriculture and the fragmentation of natural ecosystems many species had insufficient habitat resources to maintain viable populations ie many species may not be able to disperse across modified habitat to find another suitable habitat patch.
Most and many other factors are still operating today, for example in concert with changed fire regimes due to the lack of traditional aboriginal burning, weed infestations, competition with cattle etc etc.,
Cheers but not cheery!!!
