Thats a braod question. depends on location also. here they do few things. OSB for outside sheating, 2x4 walls and fiberglass insulation. another was to use 2x4 walls with T-ply. T-ply is like a thick cardboard with what resembles a wax coating so any water would repel.. this stuff is pretty tough. they also did a 1/2" black fiberboard back in the day.. could punch right through it. then all that is covered with some type of siding. vinyl, brick,shake, concrete siding etc.

wallboard(sheet rock).* insulation, sheathing (ply score or plywood or pine boards) finally an out side covering of vinal, alluminum, T-11 sheathing, Clapboards or shakes.
* Some houses insulated for electric heat have a plastic film called a vapor barrier.
