give her back to her mother for a few days...Is there anything illegal about that? Both of us still have the same custody rights as we did when we were married, so neither of us have full custody.

Yes, it is illegal because the other parent is unaware of their child's location. You can weasel all you want but especially if you are a father, you're dead meat.

When my friend was going through this, she was told by our legal office that it's not illegal unless the there is a custody order in place and you are breaking it. But from a moral standpoint, it is wrong, it would be cruel do do that. And it won't help your case if and when you do go to court for custody.
