There are many beliefs of where Santa came from. Most revolve around a man who brought food or gifts to the less fortunate around this time of year. I don't think one has anything to do with the other, just the holiday got all commercialized and the true meaning of Christmas has been forgotten.
The one thing I stress to my kids, other than the birth of Christ, is that the ideal of Santa is the spirit of giving. We don't get all caught up in the commercialism of Christmas...just the significance of Christ being born and it being the season of giving.
Try looking up Christmas traditions at About.com and you will find many answers to questions like this.
Hope this helped.

Santa has nothing to do with Jesus, but we should be mature enough to enjoy the Santa part of Christmas and still remember and celebrate the Jesus part, which is the most important part.

Santa has nothing to do with Jesus. Santa came from a story (supposedly true) about a man called Saint Nicholas who visted children at their homes and gave them presents. I think the story started somewhere in Europe.

Christmas originated from a pagan holiday. It is a blend of remembering a Saint ( St. Nicholas), a pagan celebration and the effort of the catholic church to convert people to Christianity. They declared the 25th of December as a day to celebrate and remember the birth of Christ. It was an effort to try to overshadow the pagan celebrations in the city ( a long, long time ago). If you ask a biblical scholar they will tell you Jesus Christ wasn't born in December and that none of the Christmas we know today is mentioned in the scriptures.
Easter and Halloween are a blend of pagan and christian efforts also. It is quite interesting history.

absolutely nothing. Santa came from saint nicholas [german, i believe] who went around giving toys and food to poor children.Which is why nicholas became a saint.
