i have a gmc k1500 with the 5.7L and 189K miles. any suggestions on reducing a valve tick without redoing the heads? i've tried thicker oil, thinner oil, changing the oil every 1500 miles. nothing seems to work. I'm trying to avoid a head job here. any suggestions would be appreciated.

from a mechanics point of veiw,i would suggest you pull off the valve covers and turn the engine over till each cylender is top dead center and try turning the push rods,if so turn the engine over by hand as the firing order is and adjust them by turning the push rods and tightenig the jam nut at the top of the rocker arm till it stops turning,then take it a half turn more for preload,do this to every cylender,according to the firing order,this should cure your problem

with the amount of miles you have on the engine more than likely the lifters have worn down or the cam (or both) and the lash on the valves is too loose. you could lash the rockers down a small bit to take some of the noise out but to get it all you would need to replace the lifters and possibly the cam. Just a note, you could also have a very small exhaust leak around a manifold gasket, this tends to amplify valve noise in an un nerving way and not really increase exhaust noise.

most times it's not the heads it is the lifters they are problem getting weak the best think is to go with a 15-40 oil like rotella t and a can of STP but if you live wear it get cold i would drop to a 10-40 oil you can put in a new cam and lifter pretty cheap if you have got the skill to do it yourself but maybe that is out off the question but if the oil trick don't work you will have to do some thing.

The other posters are right in that the correct solution to the problem is to examine the lifters etc. I am not usually a fan of "in the bottle" solutions but if you dont feel like taking the engine apart I have seen some people have good luck with a product called Lucas. http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=25&catid=2&loc=show
Again this is not a permanent solution but more of a band aid ot help the noise go away.

sounds like you may need to relash rocker arms...if u still get a tick you make also need to replace the cam and lifters because of excessive wear causing the tick.....You can check in the chiltons repair manual for your truck and it will give you a detailed procedure for resetting the rocker arms.....good luck

That's one of the last produced chev truck "K" engines that still have flat tappet cams. It might be going flat or you could have loose guides making noise or worn rockers.

you could try flushing out the engine.i know the older gmcs you could tighten the lifters,but i think they went with hydrolic lifters.
