Assuming that Sen. Johnson is going to be fine and will return to the Senate, the Democrats will retain majority control and the majority leader will be Harry Reid.
If Sen. Johnson has to retire and be replaced, then his replacement will be a Republican and as others who have answered here have already pointed out, Vice Prez Cheney will cast the tie-breaking vote. And it means that Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky will be the new majority leader. McConnell has been the Republican Whip for the last few years and he's already been selected by the GOP colleagues to be their new leader.

For all intents and purposes the Democrats would be the minority party. This would because the deciding vote in the Senate would be from the Vice President. The republicans have a really good chance to take control of the Senate not only because of the Senator with the "stroke" but also because 5 of the Democrat U.S. Senators are over 8o years old.

In a 50/50 vote the deciding vote would be cast by the vice president. Of course just because the senate is 50/50 that doesn't mean everybody will vote along party lines. Also there is one Independent in the senate.

Republicans interior the superb 8 years have swung so left that not some thing a lot would take position in yet in a unique way than what has befell interior the superb 8 years. yet now that you ask. The Dow replaced into at 12,four hundred at the same time as Dems took workplace in 2006. Unemployment replaced into at 4.6% now 6.a million% ( 6.4% at the same time as Bush took workplace). gas replaced into $2.20 a gallon in 2006. save in options, they were going to unravel the severe cost of gas. it may nicely be referred to that in 2006, the Dems took over each Senate subcommittee that directs congress.. yet when it were a 50-50 tie on a vote, the vp casts the tie breaking vote.

It means they are tied and the president of the senate (vice president Dick Cheney) breaks ties.
So the Republicans own the Senate again if it happens.

Since Pres Bush is a Republican, with a tie, VP Cheney breaks all ties and gives it to the Republicans.

Yes, because VP Cheney would break any ties, and of course he's a Republican.
