my family is looking for a place to live in Chicago but we cant find anything that fits our likings..we live in Minnesota where the houses are a lot nicer...from what i can tell...and my step mom is really picky! they want a house on the lake or with a pool like we have now, 6-7 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, laundry room on the first floor, big rooms, and a three car garage...where can we find something like that near chicago or in chicago? or can we? this is all on a budget of less than 500,000?

That's going to be pretty tough. In Chicago, the lakefront is dominated by condominiums rather than houses. As you move north towards Evanston, there are more homes, but they get more and more pricey as you go north into neighborhoods like Winnetka, Glencoe and Highland Park - all wonderful places to live, with easy transportation into Chicago, but very expensive. The type of homes you're talking about - 6 to 7 bedrooms and so on - might run you $1,000,000 or more in those neighborhoods.

Now, if you're willing to compromise on not being at the lake, and just want a place with a pool, that you might be able to do. $500,000 is still a lot of money, and if you're looking at suburbs further west, or even neighborhoods in Chicago like Portgage Park and Avondale, you probably could manage it. Or if you're willing to dial down to 3 bedrooms or something like that, you could probably get closer to the lakefront, particularly in neighborhoods such as the South Loop.

The other place you might check is Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I know it sounds weird, but it's only 90 minutes from Chicago, and the houses along the lakefront in Milwaukee and the North Shore (Bayside, Fox Point, etc.) are probably more in the $500K range.

Real estate in Chicago is very high. The northern suburbs offer the kind of house she's looking for but she will never find it for that price. Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park, Glencoe, and parts of Evanston are all nice places to live but they're expensive.

I would suggest that your step-mom get a good realtor or two. Lotsa luck.
