Don't think of a specific percentage - it is what is in your heart and what you can afford. To tie yourself into a number may mean that during lean times, you might not have enough to give but then feel guilty that you can't.
Remember the example of the widow's mite (in the bible) - what she gave is so puny even in today's term we could not even buy a lollipop, yet Jesus said it was that was worth more than all the money the rich people gave because what she gave was ALL she had (but it was from the heart) and she did it to help others (per requirement of the law in those days)

Give some - but regularly- and from the heart. Also, helping out charity by DOING is even more rewarding. You see something tangible and see the result of your work. You will feel truly rewarded much more than if you give money.

charity should be something you do face to face, person to person if possible. So much of the money collected by charities go to dinners, parties for the workers and for the saleries of those in the upper esculan of the given charity. Check and see where a lot of what you give goes. You will be surprised as to how much the charity really is required to give to the cause it is collecting for. If at all possible, we try our best to give to someone who really needs the help, face to face. And then, if possible, don't make this act a public one. You are giving from your heart, not to make the 6 o'clock local news.

If you do not attend a church/synagogue on a regular basis, you can use the same amount to donate to charity. Make sure that you research charities to make sure the most amount of your money doesn't get eaten up in administrative costs. MADD, for example, uses over 80% of money donated for administrative purposes. Food For The Poor, on the other hand, uses less than 4% for administrative purposes.

The Bible doesn't say you should give 10% to charity.
It says you should bring the first 10% into your storehouse. Traditionally they used this to pay for having to go to Jerusalem for festivals.

Some religious people have turned this into you must give them 10% of your income which is wrong

The Bible does say God loves a cheerful giver, so what ever you are cheerful to give above your 10% into your storehouse.

Bible also says to make sure your giving it to someone who you can see is providing the results rather than using it themselves or squandering it.

Maybe you should get hold of a concordance and do a word search on giving? The sometimes use the term tithe.

Well I was raised going to church and learning that you are supposed to tythe 10%. You don't have to give just to your church, just that you should give 10% to less fortunate people.
