I think it depends a little on what you're looking for in a game.

In abstract board games there's chess and checkers, obviously. But I'm fond of go (also called wei chi or baduk). There's also Pente and go-moku, which are 5-in-a-row games that can be played on the same board as go. There are also newer games like Tri-ominoes, Blokus, and Dvonn. All fun, but best for those who like deep thinking.

For multiple players there's Risk, Stratego, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and Monopoly. I like the first four, but if you're not really competitive, they might not be for you.

For just plain fun for the whole family, I would recommend Apples to Apples, Pictionary, Uno, or Robo Rally. The first three are not technically board games, but they're a lot of fun.

For more suggestions, you might try the forums at boardgamegeek.com. You might also check out the games at looney labs. I like lots of the games you can play with their ice house pieces.

There are a lot of classics out there, like Monopoly, Clue, Risk, etc, but there's a ton of other games great games just waiting to be played.

For small groups (2-4) - Carcasonne, Settlers of Catan, TransAmerica, Ingenious, Blokus, Sequence.

For larger groups (5-8) - 6Nimmt!, Wizard, Ticket to Ride, Traders of Genoa, Pirates' Cove, Shadows over Camelot.

Party games - Apples to Apples, Times Up!, Democrazy.

Clue, Sorry and Monopoly are classics for a small group or immediate family. At holiday parties, when we had a few more players, we had a blast with Pictionary and Balderdash.
