I am sure it can be done as you suggest, after normal school hours. If you show a teacher that you are genuinely interested they are normally obliging.

Homework (or at least the way I perfer to assign it!) is meant to be done at home, to reinforce the lessons in class. BUT I go over how it should be done, and introduce it before they leave. Due to the way my classes are taught, they tend to have the same homework structure all semester, so the first assignment doesn't count for much -- I realize they are still learning HOW to do the homework. The next time the class meets we discuss how they did, and what areas I still need to go over so they can learn to do their homework correctly. After that they are on their own, unless they request help, which I will be glad to give during office hours, or at another time by request.

The case for homework changes relatively frequently in the education circles. I think it's currently out of style to assign homework. Personally the only homework I generally assign is independent reading and spelling practice. I'm not helping you memorize spelling words in class. I'll help you see any relationships between the list's words, but you're on your own with learning the spelling.
With math, homework is usually assigned to practice a concept you've already learned in school. If you suck out on it, your teacher will know you need more help on it. Then she'll help you.
Teachers don't usually assign homework of concepts they haven't been taught. That would be pointless and a waste of time (that's kind of redundant, I know). You should already know how to do the assignment, and if you don't, your answers will let your teacher know that. She can then find a different approach to teaching the concept and/or review the concept so you're more familiar with it.

Because it would be done in the class with the teacher's help work, not homework. :-)
Seriously... homework is meant to be done on your own as way of making sure you practice and strengthen your understanding of what the teacher explained in class. People rarely learn by having something explained to them once; we generally need to perform a task several times before we retain the learning. And that's what homework is for -- practice, while the lesson is still fresh, at what you've been taught.

You know it's called homework for that reason,"To be done at home"..........that`s what my mom always told me and now that`s what i tell my kids as well! Besides that`s what your parents are for "to help you out with your school/homework,that you bring home.Good luck with your teachers and your school work........and just remember "That`s the ONLY thing NO ONE can take away from you."

I always allow my 6th grade students at least 10-15 minutes of work time for each subject. I want to make sure each student can begin the concepts while I am there to help before I send them off to complete it on their own. Those students who choose to make poor choices and abuse their work time have no excuse for not completing assignments. I work in a rougher area and I realize that many students are the caretaker at home and have many other responsibilities. Why not give them a chance; a little time has never hurt anyone.

I agree. Homework has gotten way out of line and causes nothing but stress in the home. If it can't be taught in the class period, then the teacher needs to change his or her methods.

because that's why it's called homework. to see how you yourself can handle a given task on your own, to see where your strenghts and weaknesses are.
