I have an Amana Washing Machine, its about 5-7 years old. When the machine is agitating or spinning, it sounds like an small airplane about to take off. It was making that noise plus a squeaking noise but my husband adjusted the tension on the belt and that has stopped. Any clue on what is causing this grinding, spinning noise and how to fix it?

Everyone who said that it is the bearings, should get a thumbs up... Cause that's what it is... The reason the noise stopped when your husband tightened the tension pulley is because when he did that, the tension from the belt made the tub shaft ride harder against the bearing... But by doing this he basically increased the wear on the bearing... Changing a bearing is something I wouldn't recommend for the novice repairman... There are special procedures, and tools needed to perform this task... I would recommend you call a repairman an ask him what he would charge to do this repair ... That way you can get an idea of what it would cost, and not get charged a service charge.

You should probably check to see what's inside because thats what mines does. Sometimes it has things in it like dimes or money from when you left it your pocets. So check to see whats inside. And if there is nothing rong you should get a new one or and that is perfectly normal. So if nothing is wrong with it ignore it or buy a new one and you won't have to worry about it.

My wife got a pat on the back when she called in when it first started . Time to change the bearings. Time for your pat from the service person.

Check to see if it is off balance. You may have too many clothes ending up on one side. That would throw it off balance and sounds like it is going to walk off.
