I have a virus on my computer and now windows crashes before it even starts up. How do I fix this problem without spending a ton of money?

There is a 99% chance it is not a Virus. This problem is usually due to something becoming corrupt in Windows OS.

I have research this same problem for friends. Hundred of posts can be found on how to solve this problem. None seems to work. Most are nothing more than convoluted guesses as to a fix.

I do know that a reformat of the computer solved this problem for my friends.

See if it will let you boot in safe mode.

Restart>press F8 repeatly until a screen appears>use your arrows to choose Safe Mode with Networking. Follow the following suggestions.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.

Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php

If the above programs can not fix it try HijackThis...

Download HijackThis---http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php#hijackthis. Run and Save a Log. When you log comes up copy and paste the entire log at http://www.hijackthis.de/ . Analyze your results. You will then get a screen that will tell you if you have any nasty stuff in your computer. Follow instructions to deal with any nasties. CAUTION: This is a very powerful tool. Be careful.

You have to reload your operating system...When your machine boots up, press F2 or Delete...this takes you into your BIOS...select from the various options "Boot Sequence"...and choose CD ROM as first option...insert CD and when prompted where to install Operating system (Which Drive), make sure to Format partition first...NB!! you will lose all your previous data on that drive...
It is sometimes advisable to create 2 partitions, and keep important data on the 2nd (or D Drive), and when re-installing your Operating System on C:(Primary Drive) you will still have your data on D

If you have your original XP install cd then you can reinstall windows and format your harddrive. The XP cd will ask to to format your harddrive. This is the most easy method but you lose all files in the window drive and you have to have the CD.
