A friend of my parents used to be a professor at a major university and he has written books on this subject. Most of the people that are homeless struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, so if we can conquer this problem it would eliminate most of the homelessness. Mental health has little to do with this problem, unless it is caused by their addiction.

Our government needs to be involved but NOT in building and maintaining homes. There are a number of farmhouses around this country that are sitting empty and could very easily be converted into living quarters. MANY of the homeless are intelligent individuals that need some direction in their lives. A number of them might be glad to help do such work if the federal government would give adequate tax relief to any individual that owned such property and allowed it to be used to house homeless individuals that performed manual labor on such property. The money for materials should be made available by individuals or organizations that are now attempting to assist such individuals. The homeless individual should be given the home to live in for a given number of years along with the opportunity to apply for assistance and low income housing assistance from the government. I imagine that local industries would gladly hire such individuals to perform labor at a resonable pay scale. This would be a great boon to industry, to the farmer/homeowner, to the government agancies, and most of all to our homeless individuals who would feel like they have accomplished something FOR THEMSELVES... a new beginning!! Have a happy holiday.

Admit you have a homeless population that you cannot fix.
"the poor will always be with you" Jesus, however it's not an excuse not to help if you can.

you can never end the homelessness situation because not everyone is willing to do what they need to to have a home and if the the government or people pay for these kinds of people to have homes they are wasting their money because those types of people aren't bettering society

I admire your asking this question, but I fear that while it seems a real question, it is not...
Homelessness is the norm thoughout history, remember, not the exception..

Give them your house.
The majority of homeless in the US are there because they want to be. Less than 10% are homeless because of mental state or tragedy.
