Just insert a straightened paperclip into the hole on the front of the CD drive to pop the drawer open. Since the CD is probably destroyed anyway, go ahead and force the door open and pull the broken CD out. Make sure you get all the pieces.

If I were you, I would take a piece of wire and and reach up into the unit. Toward the top. Then being as gentle as I could be, I would pull the the old broken pieces down out of the way. There has to be some pieces binding up on the upper lip of the cd drive.
I do hope you have room to do this. If not, take it to a computer repair person. These drives are not exactly cheap.

This happened to me.

I shut down the computer, and removed the CD Drive from the computer case. I then took the top off of the drive, and cleaned out the pieces of broken CD. You can shake most of them out, but you might want to get a can of compressed air to make sure you get them all.

After that, put everything back together and keep your fingers crossed that the shrapnel didn't damage anything.

My drive worked fine afterward by the way.

if pushing the eject button opens the tray some maybe you can fish the pieces out, but if not you will have to remove the drive and try to turn the drive over and shake them out with the tray part way open or its possible you can remove a couple screws and open the top of the drive and for sure get all the pieces out.
if you get all the pieces out it probably didn't hurt the drive.

one question, was this a windows xp install CD?
i heard rumor that trying to copy or install windows xp with a bootleg CD can cause it to explode in your drive rendering it useless.
just wondering

good luck

The cd drive has a small hole that allows you to open the drive manually, you need to use a paper clip and bend it so it forms a long straight piece, then look for a small hole and gently insert it.
You will feel resistance, then gently push it and the tray should open.

If this fails, and your cd has in fact shattered you will need to remove the whole drive and replace it.

COOL i'd like to see that!!! i bet it sounded wicked when it happened. i bet you pooed yourself... try taking the drive out and shaking and rattling it to get the pieces out after manually opening as far as you can through the little pin hole on the front. ps:- it's probably knackered now anyway but what a laugh ha ha .
