I have a Subaru that has P195R60/15 tires on it. One tire went flat (has a large hole in it). I was told that on an AWD vehicle, you MUST replace all 4 tires whenever you replace one. Is this true and why? I SO cannot afford to replace even one tire! Also, must they be the exact same size? A friend has offered me 4 tires, size P215R70/15. Can I use these? If not, why not? If so, is it safe to change the size of the tire?

Subaru is extremely strict in regard to replacing a single tire on one of its AWD vehicles.

The replacement tire must be identical to the other three - the same brand, model, etc. and the tread depths from the most worn to the newest tire can not exceed a 20% difference - meaning none of the 3 old tires can be more than 20% worn. Mis-match a tire beyond those specs and you stand a very good chance of destroying the transfer case in your AWD system. I have seen it happen, more than once. That will cost you a few thousand bucks.

What would you rather buy, 4 tires or a new AWD system?

PS

The P215/70R15 is a much taller and wider tire than the P195/60R15 and probably doesn't have the H speed rating required for this vehicle. Yeah they will probably fit the wheels but it will not only look really stupid, you may have a problem with the tires fouling the fenders or suspension.

The only thing you must worry about is all 4 tires being the same size ( the size listed on the tire.) . Period. You can replace one at a time. No problem. Minimal thing slie wear will not cause a problem.

The transfer case ( what makes your 4 wheel drive a four wheel drive will burn up if you have two small tires and two large ones. )

on the first part of your question: If you replace the one tire it needs to have a wear pattern close to the other tires or that wheel will pull more and could cause you some driving problems or at lease some adjustment to your driving: As to the second part, you can up grade to an larger size, but, Make sure that you have enough clearance between the tires and the wheel wells, so, they will not rub on the under side of the finders. Going to a larger size will give you more mileage out of the tires, but it may cut down on you MPG a little.

205/fifty 5/16 will be below a 1/2 inch wider and 1 / 4 inch taller. this should be no difficulty. check out the Toyo Proxy 4 if you're looking for a cheap performance tire. should be less than $one hundred each and every.
