I've seen african americans with every other common male name - christopher, michael, david, james, robert, etc - but no matthews. anomalies bug me.

I know a couple, 3, African Americans named Matthew.

The older generation of black people have those names and some younger generation of people as well but the youngest generation decided to break away from tradition and name their children with they want too. But remember names become popular and unpopular as time goes on and not all African Americans are deeply spiritual. Personally, I want to name my children biblical names particularly my sons so it is a personal choice

Yeah, I know a black guy named Matt. I know a couple black guys named Matt. It's a common thing. Where do you live? lol.
