If you are running a test on your starter and it is out of the car, connect jumper cables to your starter; run one end to the positive side of your battery and the other to the battery lead on the starter, then connect the other cable to the body of the starter and the other end to your engine block. now to see if your starter and or solenoid are working, using a insulted screwdriver cross one of the solenoid terminals to the main connection where the lead from the + side of the battery. Get a good hold on the starter.

Well to start with it could be your solenoid. Did you try to short the solenoid across? To do this take a screwdriver and touch each stud totyhe one next to it. If this is the actual problem shorting the solenoid should turn the engine over. If this doesn't work then your next step would be to see if the starter or starter drive is jammed on the ring gear. (You may have to remove the starter from the truck to see if the starter drive is bad itself). You can test the starter yourself... Take off the starter and take a 12 volt battery and a pair of booster cables and hook the red end of the cable to the positive on the battery post. Then take the black end of the booster cable and hook it to the negitive on the battery. Now hook the other end of the booster cable (red) to the stud on the starter where the positive battery cable bolts on. Then take your other booster end (black) and touch it to a good ground on the starter. If the starter spins the starter is good. If not you need to change your starter. Also if you have a standered transmission you may want to check the clutch interlock switch... This is a device that is mounted on the clutch and only is activated when the clutch is pushed in. Also the engine will only turn over if the clutch is pushed in. But if this switch is bad the engine will not turn over either. Lastly clean all connections good. Where the battery cable mounts to the starter, where it mounts to the solenoid, and where it goes on the battery post. Also clean the battery post as well. Do the same for the negitive cable where ever it is mounted. Also clean the it where it mounts to the solenoid and onto the battery. Use Vaseline. That is what I use... It works wonders!!!

No because the positive does not reach the engine block. The solenoid is insulated it keeps them separate.
