In my experience so far, every type of classical music has its own difficulties.

Baroque Music - Hand coordination is very important as each hand may be carrying different melodies. Pieces like fugues are difficult in the sense that you have to bring out the melody line.

Classical Music - Rapid scales are common in these pieces. Uneven notes and slips may be common while playing these pieces. The tempo markings on some pieces may be impossible to reach.

Romantic Music - Whenever my Grade 6 friend looks at a score from that period, she would always get a shock. Romantic pieces of a higher level normally have heavy chords with many accidentals and the use of the pedal is often. The tempo markings on some pieces may be impossible to reach.

20th Century Music - You'll have to deal a lot with dissonant sounds. Accidentals are all over the place in a score. Syncopations is very common where by the main melody is offbeat.

Hopefully this will be useful for you.

Check out a guy named John Cage , a revolutionary who did things like stick paper clips , silverware , clothespins , etc. in the strings of a piano and making it sound unorthodox, that's pretty difficult.
