Are all the people that answered this question for real? How many people does it take to state the exact same thing? Well as you may know "www" stands for World Wide Web. This was the standard adoped by the Internet community to identify computers accessible from the Internet. These computers run a special software program called a web server such as IIS or Apache. The hardware that runs this software is normally server equipment. The "www" and the remainder of the URL tells various Internet servers where you need to be directed.

The so called "Internet" consists of a lot of different services, like chat, downloads, communication, Newsgroups and other things.
As you go online you need to specify what kind of service you would like to log into.
If you use "www" you get a service called "World Wide Web" which like I already said - is just one part of the Internet itself.
