I am a student, sharing a house with other students. Well I'm the last one to leave for the holidays but I was not sure what to do with the router. At the moment, our route is plugged in at the hall (the only place with a phone line). However, our area has had a lot of burglaries and I am sceptible about leaving the router there easy to steal if we do get burgled into. However, I was not sure if it was unplugged for a while (I'd then bring it home with me or at least lock it in my room) that I would lose all the settings and having to set up the wireless connection again (it was a huge stress getting it set up the 1st time). The settings have been saved so when we reset it they are still there but wasn't sure if it was unplugged for a long time if it lost its settings.

the only setting that will change will be the network information that the router gets from the DSL/Cable modem which comes from the ISP. The settings stored in the router are in NVRAM so once you power it back on it will return to the previous state.

In most cases the settngs are loaded into what we call non volatile memory, and should not be all lost.

All routers have a function to back up the settings, I would back them up to either the pc or a memory stick and when you reconnect it, and it goes back to the default settings, you can just do a restore from that file.
